News: Mars One Colony Reality TV Project Has 78k Astronaut Settler Applicants
The Mars One colony project is seeking astronaut settlers and 78,000 have already applied. Mars One is already planning a group of cargo missions in 2016 to set up base camp. The first four colonist are expected to arrive in 2023 at a cost of $6 billion and more settlers will arrive after that.
Mars One does not have any plans to bring the Mars Colonist back to earth. In an effort to find the right candidates, the organization has will start accepting video applications for an upcoming reality show.
The Mars One application process, which costs between $5 and $75 depending on where you live, officially opened up on April 22 and officials announced today they have received 78,000 Mars One applications already.
Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp said, "With 78,000 applications in two weeks, this is turning out to be the most desired job in history. These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants."
The Mars One reality TV show will whittle down the first 50 to 100 chosen candidates down to 28 to 40 candidates by 2015. These people will be split into groups of four to compete for the hearts of the audience, who will then vote who gets to be on the first Mars One colony.
